Born in Siberia in winter of 1991, shortly before the collapse of the Soviet Union, Magdalena Rey moved to the UK with her mother, when she was ten.
Inspired by old, traditional oil paintings, which often depict figures frozen mid passionate motion, Magdalena’s own aim and interest is to create similar richly atmospheric scenes that convey motion, in which the viewer can glimpse into a single moment of her characters’ private lives and feel at home there.
Magdalena attended art school from the age of five and hasn’t stopped drawing since. She moved to the UK with her mother, who, after spending most of her life behind the iron curtain, dreamed of living in the West.
Having always been attracted to various art forms, Magdalena became a model at the age of 18. In both modelling and art she aimed to convey deep messages and emotions, as her passion for human psychology and philosophy was on par with her passion for art. It was then not surprising that she briefly paused her artistic pursuits at age 21 to study Philosophy at degree level.
Although her skills range from realistic portraiture in oil, acrylic and watercolour, to mixed media abstractions and more, for the past five years she mainly focused on developing her detailed pen-drawings, most of which are of unique characters from the world of her imagination. In the amount of time it takes her to complete a pen-drawing, she has thought of an intricate back story for each character, which, she believes, helps to make them appear more relatable and real.
‘Serenity’s Dream’ is a world existing beyond time and space; created as a sanctuary from monotony and hardships in the mind of a young girl, whose name is a state of mind she seeks to find – Serenity.
In this place, where reality sleeps and dreams awaken, don’t be alarmed if you see a giant crane dancing through the sky carrying the sun in its beak, followed, some hours later, by an owl adorned with jewels, making her slow but graceful flight with the moon securely in her claws.
It is a magical world, where fish fly from branch to branch and even to the edges of outer space to snack on passing asteroids; where birds are made of starlight that illuminates the night, accompanying the countless concerts played and sung by mermaid girls, who live for laughter and music.
It is a place of love, security and comfort – an immaculately woven repression of a not-so-ideal life. But you won’t see a single frown or speck of dust in this imagination-built Universe of our gentle, young dreamer-girl; it is simply perfect.
